Green County has three very different trail experiences to offer. The many towns and villages will charm you. Albany and Brodhead are both located on the Sugar River State Recreational Trail and on the Sugar River. While in the area taking advantage of the biking and hiking opportunities, stay at the charming bed and breakfasts.
The Sugar River State Recreational Trail is a 23.5 mile (39 kilometers) trail that runs from New Glarus, Wisconsin to Brodhead. It passes through gentle, rolling hills along the Sugar River, through the Albany Wildlife Area and the communities of Albany and Monticello.
The trail headquarters in New Glarus is located in the 1887 Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Railroad depot, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You can also purchase Wisconsin Sporting licenses at the depot as well as books of area interest and speciality T-shirts and other items. Here you can purchase your daily or annual pass for a small fee. They also have bikes to rent, adequate parking, and restrooms.
The trail follows the abandoned railroad bed through Green County farmland and crosses trestle bridges and streams. It has a quality biking surface and only minimal grades to deal with, so it ranks as one of the best biking experiences in south central Wisconsin. After leaving New Glarus, the trail passes through the communities of Monticello and Albany and ends in Brodhead. All four communities have restaurants, shops, and interesting places to see, as well as a variety of festivals and events during the season, so be sure to check with the locals for what’s happening, or for more information contact Sugar River State Recreational Trail, PO Box 781, New Glarus, WI 53574, (608) 527-2334.
New Glarus is proud of its large outdoor swimming pool, which is located in the Village Park just a block off First Street. It’s an excellent facility open to the public for a small fee all summer. Children love to swim and then enjoy the play equipment in the park afterwards. There is usually an adults only swim offered for an hour or two in the evenings. Showers are available. The pace of play is relaxed, so you can enjoy the natural setting of meadows, fields, woods, and water. Walk the course, if you can, to take advantage of the setting. Carts are available. A practice area is available. Non-golfers and children of golfers are welcome. Bring a picnic lunch and your beverage of choice, if you desire. If you would like more information, call 608-527-6366.
