A welcome rural oasis, the Spring Green General Store provides visitors with an opportunity to relax, shop, eat lunch, sit on the front porch, use the rest rooms or get water for their dog. This old cheese warehouse has been converted into an extensive retail store with an original Wisconsin cafe.
If you are road weary and need a good homemade meal, the Cafe at the General Store provides a constantly evolving menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and multi-ethnic foods. Kitchen creativity abounds resulting in daily lunch specials as simply good as “Mushroom Stroganoff” or as out of the ordinary as a “Tandoori Chicken Salad Wrap.”
The menu is accented by a full offering of specialty coffees, lattes, cappuccinos and micro brewed beer. A continental breakfast is served on weekday mornings, but on the weekends a full and original breakfast menu is provided featuring some well known Wisconsin products: cheese curds, maple syrup, craisins and whole grain pancake mix grown & milled right here in the River Valley.
Make sure to take some time to wander through the retail side of the General Store. Discover an inspired collection of women’s clothing and accessories, cards, toys and gifts. Many of the products sold in the gourmet food section have been tested in the restaurant before they land on the retail shelves. You can take home some of the Ancora coffee served in the cafe (try the Big Blue Building Blend created just for the General Store) or buy some Lonesome Stone Wholegrain Pancake Mix that they use for weekend breakfasts (and don’t forget the Hilltop Sugarbush Maple syrup from Plain).
After studying the group of panoramic photos hanging near the register, customers often ask “What is BobFest?” The best known of their quarterly special events, BobFest is an annual Memorial Day Weekend celebration of Bob Dylan’s birthday–an outdoor event, with up to twelve hours of fine music and good food. Their counter staff will also be happy to help you with detailed visitor information.
Although considered a part of the downtown business district, it is a bit hard to find the General Store. So look for the big blue building next to the railroad tracks in a wonderful pocket of stores on South Albany Street. The General Store is open year round, 7 days a week, Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m. To 6 p.m., Sat. 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sun. 8 a.m. To 4 p.m. The full menu is served until 1⁄2 hour before closing.
