Wind Turbines

Stretching along the south side of Highway 18 between Cobb and Montfort are 20 wind turbine generators. This is the largest wind farm in Wisconsin. These generators can supply the energy for approximately 10,500 homes. They are an awesome sight. Each turbine stands on a 215 foot tower and has three blades that are 110 feet long. The turbines are computer controlled so that the rotors face the wind. Ideal wind speed is 26-28 miles per hour but the blades will begin rotating at 7mph and electricity will be generated at 9mph. At a wind speed of 9mph the blades will rotate at 14 revolutions per minute. The maximum blade speed is 22 rpm. The electricity is carried via underground distribution lines.
